Energy Performance Management

According to the U.S. experience, the warmer climate is likely to increase summer peak electricity demand in most regions of the United States. To meet increases in this peak demand would require new investments in energy infrastructure. In a warmer climate, Americans would use more electricity for air conditioning and less natural gas, oil, and wood for heating. If the country's climate warms by 16.7°C, the demand for energy used for cooling would increase by about 5-20%, while the demand for energy used for heating would decrease by about 3-15%. https://www3.epa.gov/climatechange/impacts/energy.html

Although the total energy consumption amount in Hong Kong will continue to increase due to growth in population, economy as well as temperature. However, the critical action is to avoid surpassing the peak load of the existing power systems. Peak load refers to the highest amount of demand we use at a given time. Since there are no special tariffs, such as on-peak or off-peak tariffs to influence consumer behavior in residential sector, the load management relies on peak shaving in commercial sector. To promote effective energy management and saving in commercial sector remains important.

Look forward, World Green Organisation expects further energy saving gained from new policy or measures from Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme or from technology change, such as inverter in air-conditioning. Apart from policy change and technology breakthrough, the adoption of energy saving solutions coupled with users' behavioral change remains important. To combat climate change, we should adopt the new technology in energy saving. But to reduce the energy wastage from source through behavioral change is equally important.
